Lady Project Woman of Style // Nikki Groom

There is a quote from celebrity stylist and designer, Rachel Zoe, that says: "Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak." When I met Nikki for the first time, it was at a Lady Project networking event last winter. Mutual friends had introduced us, and one vivid thing I remember about our interaction, actually way before we got to speak to each other, was that she had on these fantastic pair of gold metallic boots. And wow did they stand out among a sea of black and brown boots!  Even more fascinating was the fact that Nikki's calm and reserved demeanor seemed to tone down the presence of these drama-queen-esque boots.

There was no way you could pass her and not want to know about the woman with the golden and stylish feet.

Without having to speak, Nikki's bold choice let the world know that she did not care to shine on her own terms, and had all the confidence in the world to back it up - making her this month's Woman of Style!

What does style mean to you, in both your personal and professional life?

“Style is the outward expression of who I am. When I dress in a way that feels true to me, I can show up and stand out with confidence — whether I'm at a networking event or happy hour with friends.”

What defines your signature style? And, how did you come to realize it?

“I'm not sure I found my signature style; I'd say it found me. I'd describe it as edgy glam, because I'm most comfortable in black and obsessed with leather and metallics. I practically live in my skinny jeans, but love getting dressed up for a night out in an LBD and some strappy heels. Statement necklaces are a must.”

Where do you like to shop?

“My boyfriend took me shopping in Boston last weekend and I bought... zilch. I blame online shopping, which lets you filter everything by price, size, and even color. You can see how things look on without having to set foot in a fitting room. Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks, and Bloomingdale's are my favorite online stores, but I also love trawling the racks at TJ Maxx once in a while.”

What are you splurging on this summer season?

“I bought a white Elizabeth and James racer back cutout sheath dress and gold wedge Badgley Mischka sandals for a polo match the other weekend — and a floppy hat, of course.”

You feel most creative when you're wearing…

“I've got to be comfortable when I'm writing, so that usually means I'm braless in pajama pants. In other words, I'm not wearing anything I'd wear out in public!”

What's the most rewarding aspect of your work?

“I get to wake up every day and help women entrepreneurs everywhere harness the message they were born to deliver and make a difference in other people's lives. That's powerful stuff.”

Can you share a few tips on steps business owners can take to align their story/messaging with their vision?

“People often hire me to write for them because they're struggling to understand what makes them unique. A lot of it is self-belief: When you believe in yourself and your mission and your message and write from your heart, not your head, you'll find the right words.”
