How often do you have the experience of walking into your closet and loving all the clothing options staring back at you?
For me, the chances are more likely that I’ll look into my closet and determine I have nothing to wear! This perplexes my husband as he loves to point out that I have a closet full of clothes. He can’t understand this experience of having nothing to wear.
It's not that I don't have anything to wear. It’s that I don’t have anything I’m so excited about wearing. I don’t have anything that I put on and know I look like a million bucks.
It’s my dream to have a stylist put together my outfits each morning and feel like a celeb when I walk out the door. Hey, a girl can dream right?! But I know that’s something I can’t actually afford.
Meet Margaret Batting. She's a fun, fearless, and witty former corporate exec who can transform what’s currently in your closet to create your true image.
I’ve known Margaret for two years but was always too nervous to let her into my closet. I usually feel comfortable getting vulnerable, but something about the idea of her going through all my clothes had me paralyzed with fear.
“What would she think of my wardrobe?”
“Will she judge my bad buying decisions?”
“Will she tell me I need to go buy all new clothes?”
These were just some of the anxious thoughts I was having. But one day, the pain of having a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear was greater than the pain I imagined of getting Margaret’s help.
Then, the unimaginable happened.
Like an angel, Margaret appeared at my doorstep looking perfectly coiffed with notebook in hand. First, we spoke for 30 minutes about what my goals were, how I would define my style, and what stores or brands best match my style.
Then, she entered my closet. My palms were getting sweaty, but it was too late to turn back now. To my surprise, she complimented me, acknowledging that I had somewhat of a system in place to organize my clothes. And then she got to work.
She literally touched every single item in my closet. She asked very pointed questions that made it quite clear if that was a piece I should keep or not. And it wasn’t based on value or brand. It was based on how well the piece was aligned with my style - the image I wanted to project.
And piece by piece, it was starting to come together. As we cleared out the “give aways”, she was simultaneously organizing the pieces that remained - not by color, not by type, but by its application.
The results? Transformative.
My closet was jam packed prior to her arrival. I couldn't see all the clothes I had. Now, I could easily glance at everything I owned, and had the space to move around as well!
I got rid of 100 hangers. Don't ask me why I had so many. I don’t know. She said it was the most she had ever seen. Great.
My closet now had sections - work, weekend wear, and date night. How fun! Thus solving the problem of “what do I wear today?” Now, I know what section to go to based on if it’s Wednesday (work), Sunday (weekend), or night time!
She created new outfits for me using the clothes I already owned. She paired a sweater with a scarf I would have never thought of! She suggested a skirt and vest combo that looked straight out of Vogue.
Best of all, I love my clothes again. I’m excited to put pieces on that I haven’t worn in years. I got the results I thought were beyond my means. I guess dreams do come true!
